Local Economy

Farnham is an attractive, Georgian market town in Surrey, steeped in history with its 12th century castle and adjoining parkland of 320 acres, which was formerly the residence of the Bishops of Winchester for some 800 years.

Surrounded by beautiful countryside, much of which is owned by the National Trust, Farnham is an area ideal for walking and riding. Frensham Ponds, Hankley, Thursley and Little Frensham are all worth a visit.

Farnham is known for its Georgian architecture, particularly along Castle Street and West Street. The town features an interesting selection of period properties, dating from the 16th to 19th centuries, many with distinctive features such as sash windows, ornate facades, and original fireplaces. Beyond the centre, Victorian and Edwardian houses can be found, along with 20th-century family homes and an assortment of newer properties.

Some of the most sought-after properties can be found along Castle Street, West Street, and The Borough. These areas feature beautiful Georgian townhouses and character cottages. The Bourne area offers larger family houses with gardens, while South Farnham is popular for its proximity to well-regarded schools.

Farnham sits in an advantageous position for travel, with numerous options for getting around:

  • Car & Road: Farnham enjoys good road connections, situated near the A31 which links to the A3 and M3 motorways. These routes allow for straightforward travel to London (about 1 hour), Guildford (25 minutes), and Portsmouth (1 hour). Local roads also connect Farnham to surrounding villages such as Crondall, Wrecclesham and Rowledge.
  • Bus: Local bus services operate throughout Farnham and to nearby towns. Stagecoach provides regular connections to Aldershot, Guildford, and Haslemere, with journey times typically between 20-40 minutes depending on the destination.

Farnham offers plenty to discover for newcomers and long-term residents alike, with historical landmarks and natural spaces throughout the town and its outskirts.

  • Alice Holt Forest: Ancient woodland with walking and cycling trails, play areas, and a Gruffalo sculpture trail for younger visitors. (Bucks Horn Oak, Farnham, GU10 4LS)
  • Birdworld: One of England’s largest bird parks, home to hundreds of different species, including penguins, flamingos, parrots and owls (plus other animals too). (Holt Pound, Farnham, GU10 4LD)
  • Farnham Castle: We can highly recommend this stunning 12th-century fortress, which provides panoramic views across the town and countryside. The keep remains partially ruined, and the Bishop’s Palace contains several exhibitions communicating local history. (Castle Hill, Farnham, GU9 0AG)
  • Frensham Ponds: These large, scenic ponds were constructed in the 13th century as fish ponds for the Bishop of Winchester, which are now popular for walking and watching the local wildlife – located to the south of Farnham. (Bacon Lane, Churt, Farnham, GU10 2QB)
  • Lion and Lamb Yard: A unique shopping courtyard in Farnham’s historic centre featuring independent shops and cafés housed in attractive period buildings. (Lion & Lamb Yard, Farnham, GU9 7LL)

Farnham’s local economy contains many of the traditional sectors you’d expect, alongside newer industries and the potential to commute to thriving, nearby towns and cities.

The town contains numerous working opportunities across heritage tourism, leisure and local business, including David Lloyd Leisure, Farnham Castle, and several business parks on the outskirts. The local area benefits from the presence of the University for the Creative Arts, which generates positions in education and support services while nurturing a cluster of design and media businesses.

The retail and hospitality are also significant sectors, with independent shops offering more stable employment than seen in many comparable towns.

Testimonials

Personal service
Everyone at Bourne has been lovely to work with. They’re professional and responsive, whilst also providing what feels like a very personal service, far removed from some corporate estate agents. The sale of our property went through very smoothly with minimal stress.

No hesitation in recommending
Patrick was so helpful and communicative throughout the whole process. Bourne managed to sell our unusual property where 2 other agents failed and I have no hesitation in recommending them.

We recently sold our house through Bourne and Patrick was incredibly helpful throughout the whole process. He was understanding and accommodating with arranging viewings as we both worked from home.
